What this means
Returns are a monthly running cost, not a one-off event. Multiplying the true cost of one return by your return rate usually reveals a bigger number than sellers expect. Planning estimate only — not legal, tax, financial, or platform-policy advice.
All calculations are estimates based on average platform fees. Real profits may vary depending on category, ads, and shipping.

How to use this calculator
- Enter your numbers in each field above — the calculator updates instantly as you type, so there's nothing to submit.
- Use your real figures when you have them, or sensible estimates while you're planning. If a field doesn't apply, leave it at zero.
- Compare the results, then change one input at a time to see how each lever (price, cost, fees, volume) moves the outcome.
Formula
Monthly returns = Orders × Return rate · Cost per return = Refund + Product + Original shipping + Return shipping + Fees − Recovery · Monthly return cost = Monthly returns × Cost per return · Annual = Monthly × 12
Worked example
300 orders/month, 5% return rate, $45 refund, $12 product, $7 outbound, $6 return shipping, $1.80 fees, $8 recovery, $12 profit per order.
- Monthly returns = 15
- Cost per return = 45 + 12 + 7 + 6 + 1.80 − 8 = $63.80
- Monthly cost = 15 × 63.80 = $957
- Annual = $11,484
- Profit before returns = $3,600, so ≈ 26.6% lost
Answer: ≈ $957/month, $11,484/year, ~27% of profit
How it works
One return feels small; a return rate is a running expense. Sellers who reduce a 5% return rate to 3% often gain more profit than a new ad campaign would, because every avoided return saves shipping both ways plus the fees.
How to interpret your results
- Dollar values are shown per sale, per order, or per item unless a result is explicitly labelled monthly, weekly, or daily.
- Percentages (margin, ROI, conversion rate) are easier to compare across products and price points than raw dollars — use them when you benchmark.
- A positive result means you're ahead after the costs and fees you entered. A negative result means the current numbers don't work — change a lever (raise price, cut a cost, lower ad spend) and recalculate.
- Treat the output as a planning estimate, not a guarantee. Fees, taxes, and conversion rates shift over time — re-run the numbers whenever a key input changes.
Common mistakes
- Using the refund amount alone as the cost per return.
- Assuming every returned item can be resold at full value.
- Tracking return rate by month without checking which products drive it.
