How to Calculate Your eBay Profit

The price your item sells for is not what you keep. After eBay's fees, your product cost, and shipping, your real profit is smaller. Here's how to work it out.

Reviewed for current platform fees and pricing rules.

The fees that come out

eBay's main fee is the final value fee — about 13.6% of the total sale (item + shipping) for most categories, plus a $0.30 per-order fee. Payment processing is already included. If you promote the listing, an ad fee comes out too.

The profit formula

Net profit = (item price + shipping you charge) − product cost − your shipping cost − eBay fees. Margin is profit divided by total sale. ROI is profit divided by what you paid for the item.

Margin tells you how efficient the sale was; ROI tells you how hard your sourcing dollars worked. For resellers, ROI is usually the more useful number.

A worked example

Sell a $50 item with $8 shipping — total sale $58. eBay fees: 13.6% of $58 = $7.89, plus the $0.30 per-order fee = about $8.19. If the item cost you $20 and shipping cost you $6, your profit is $58 − $20 − $6 − $8.19 = about $23.81. That's roughly a 41% margin and a 119% ROI on what you paid for the item.

Common profit mistakes

Forgetting that the final value fee applies to shipping you charge, not just the item. Leaving out your own shipping cost when the buyer's shipping charge didn't cover it. Ignoring the flat $0.30, which eats hard into low-priced items. And forgetting Promoted Listings ad fees on items you promoted.

What's a healthy eBay margin?

It depends on the category, but most resellers aim for at least 25–35% net margin after fees, so a slow month or a return doesn't sink the listing. Anything under 15% leaves no cushion.

Always check current rates

eBay updates its fees and category rates from time to time. Confirm your category's current rate in eBay's fee schedule before you price.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my eBay profit?
Take the total sale (item + shipping charged), subtract your product cost, your shipping cost, other costs, and eBay's fees. What's left is your net profit.
Does eBay charge fees on shipping?
Yes — the final value fee is calculated on the total sale (item + shipping), not just the item.
Is payment processing a separate fee?
No. It's already included in the final value fee since 2021.
What's a good eBay profit margin?
Most resellers target at least 25–35% net margin after fees to leave room for returns and slow months.
