Do Etsy Sellers Need to Collect Sales Tax?
The short answer: for orders placed on Etsy, you almost certainly don't collect sales tax yourself — Etsy does it for you, automatically. Here's how it works and what you're still responsible for.

What 'marketplace facilitator' means
Under marketplace facilitator laws, Etsy is legally required to calculate, collect, and remit sales tax on your behalf. As of 2026 this covers every US state with a statewide sales tax, plus Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico — 45 states and territories. Etsy adds the buyer's exact combined rate at checkout, collects it, and sends it to the state. You can't opt out, and you don't need to set up tax rates in your shop.
So what do you actually keep?
The sales tax Etsy collects was never your money — it passed through your account on its way to the state. Your taxable income is your gross sales minus the sales tax Etsy remitted. Etsy's Orders CSV shows an 'Order Sales Tax' column so you can see exactly what was collected.
What you still need to handle
Etsy collecting the tax doesn't mean you're entirely off the hook:
Registration and 'zero-dollar' returns: Some states still require you to register for a sales tax permit and file periodic returns reporting that Etsy handled the tax. This varies by state.
Off-Etsy sales: If you sell on your own website, at craft fairs, or wholesale, those sales are YOUR responsibility to charge and remit tax on — Etsy's collection only covers Etsy orders.
Recordkeeping: Keep your reports, especially if you sell across multiple channels or states.
The states with no statewide sales tax
Five states have no statewide sales tax (often remembered as 'NOMAD'): New Hampshire, Oregon, Montana, Alaska, and Delaware. Note that Alaska has no state tax but many local municipalities levy their own, and some now require marketplace facilitators to collect.
Sales tax vs income tax — don't confuse them
Sales tax is separate from income tax. Even though Etsy handles sales tax, your Etsy profit is still taxable income you report on your own return, and you may receive a 1099-K. The reporting threshold has changed repeatedly, so verify the current rule at IRS.gov.
When to get help
If you sell across several channels or states, the registration and filing side can get complicated. A tax professional or sales-tax automation tool can take it off your plate.
