Etsy Sales Tax Calculator

First, the important part: if you sell on Etsy, you almost certainly don't need to calculate sales tax yourself. Etsy automatically collects and remits it for orders in 45+ US states. This calculator is for the cases where you DO handle tax โ€” sales on your own website or at a craft fair โ€” and for estimating what a buyer pays. Tip: for Etsy orders, just check the 'Order Sales Tax' column in your Orders CSV to see what Etsy already collected.

Look up your buyer's combined state + local rate. For Etsy orders you don't need to โ€” Etsy applies the exact rate automatically.

Etsy Sales Tax Tips

  • Etsy handles sales tax automatically

In 45+ US states, Etsy calculates, collects, and remits sales tax for you at checkout.

  • Check your Orders CSV

The 'Order Sales Tax' column shows exactly what Etsy collected for each order.

  • Off-Etsy sales are your responsibility

Craft fairs and your own website require you to charge and remit the correct rate yourself.

  • Don't count tax as income

Sales tax collected by Etsy passes through your account but was never yours to keep.

Disclaimer: This calculator provides general estimates, not tax advice. Sales tax rules vary by state and change over time. Verify rates and requirements with your state's tax authority or a qualified tax professional.

Formula

Sales tax = Sale amount ร— (tax rate รท 100) ยท Total = Sale amount + Sales tax ยท To remove tax from a total: Base = Total รท (1 + rate รท 100)

Worked example

A $40 sale at an 8% rate.

  1. Sales tax = 40 ร— 0.08 = $3.20
  2. Total = 40 + 3.20 = $43.20
  3. Going the other way: a $43.20 tax-inclusive total at 8% breaks down to $40.00 base + $3.20 tax.

Answer: $3.20 tax ยท $43.20 total (or $40.00 base + $3.20 tax in reverse)

How it works

Sales tax is a percentage added to the sale price, set by the buyer's state and locality. On Etsy, the platform calculates the buyer's exact combined rate and adds it at checkout automatically. For sales you make outside Etsy, you're responsible for charging and remitting the correct rate yourself.

Common mistakes

  • Thinking you need to add sales tax to your Etsy listings โ€” you don't; Etsy handles it.
  • Counting Etsy-collected sales tax as part of your income โ€” it isn't; it passed through your account but was never yours.
  • Forgetting that off-Etsy sales (your own site, craft fairs) ARE your responsibility.

FAQ

Does Etsy collect sales tax for me?
Yes. Etsy automatically calculates, collects, and remits sales tax in every US state with a statewide sales tax, plus D.C. and Puerto Rico. You can't opt out.
Do I need to add sales tax to my Etsy prices?
No. Etsy adds the correct tax at checkout based on the buyer's location.
Then what is this calculator for?
Estimating what a buyer pays, and handling sales tax on your own off-Etsy sales like craft fairs or your own website.
Is the sales tax Etsy collects part of my income?
No. Your taxable income is your gross sales minus the sales tax Etsy remitted.
Do I still have to do anything?
Possibly. Some states require you to register and file 'zero-dollar' returns even when Etsy remits the tax. Check your state's rules. See the guide below.
