How To Start A Shopify Store

Shopify gives you a real online store in a weekend — but the difference between a store that sells and one that sits is in the setup. Here's the no-fluff plan to launch right.

Pick a niche tight enough to win

'Home goods' is not a niche; 'minimalist ceramic planters for desks' is. Tight niches win because you can write specific copy, target specific ads, and rank for specific search terms. Broad stores look like everyone else and have nowhere to start with marketing.

Validate the products before you build the store

Confirm there are buyers (existing competitors selling consistently) and a real margin (3x landed cost minimum for paid-ads-driven stores, 2x for organic). If neither is true, change the product, not the store.

Pick a Shopify plan and a clean theme

Basic Shopify is fine for launch. Use a free, fast Shopify-built theme (Dawn, Sense, Refresh) — they convert better than most paid themes because they're built for speed. Don't install 20 apps before you have 20 sales.

Build the essential pages

Home, collection pages, product pages with real photos and clear copy, About (story sells), Contact, Shipping & Returns, Privacy, and Terms. Set up a basic email capture (10% off first order) — it pays back forever.

Checkout, shipping, taxes

Turn on Shopify Payments to avoid the extra 0.5–2% third-party processor fee. Set real shipping rates: weight-based or flat per zone — do NOT under-price shipping to 'feel competitive'. Enable automatic tax calculation where you're registered. Test the entire checkout on mobile before launch.

Launch — and then drive traffic

A Shopify store gets zero free traffic from Shopify itself. Plan how the first 100 visitors arrive: Instagram/TikTok content, Google Shopping ads, Meta ads, influencer seeding, email to a personal list, or a Reddit-friendly story post. Without a traffic plan, the store is a beautiful empty room.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to start a Shopify store?
About $39/month for the Basic plan, plus a domain (~$15/year). Realistic launch budget including product samples, photos, and starter ads: $500–$2,000.
Do I need to know how to code?
No. Shopify themes are drag-and-drop. Custom code only matters once revenue justifies it.
Shopify or Etsy first?
Etsy if you make handmade goods and want built-in traffic. Shopify if you have margin to run ads, want a brand, or plan to build a customer email list.
How long until my Shopify store makes money?
Stores with a clear niche, real margin, and a traffic plan can hit consistent sales in 30–90 days. Without those three, most stores stall.
