Formula

Referral fee = Selling price × category rate (most categories 15%, minimum $0.30) · Net profit = Selling price − product cost − referral fee − fulfillment fee − other costs · Profit margin (%) = (Net profit ÷ Selling price) × 100 · ROI (%) = (Net profit ÷ your cost to get the unit to Amazon) × 100

Worked example

You sell an item for $29.99. Product cost $7.00, inbound shipping $1.00/unit, large standard size.

  1. Referral fee (15%): 29.99 × 0.15 = $4.50
  2. FBA fulfillment fee (large standard): $4.98
  3. Total Amazon fees: 4.50 + 4.98 = $9.48
  4. Total cost: 7.00 + 1.00 + 9.48 = $17.48
  5. Net profit: 29.99 − 17.48 = $12.51
  6. Profit margin: 12.51 ÷ 29.99 × 100 ≈ 41.7%
  7. ROI: 12.51 ÷ (7.00 + 1.00) × 100 ≈ 156%

How it works

Amazon charges a referral fee (a percentage of the sale) plus a flat FBA fulfillment fee per unit based on size and weight. Add your product cost, inbound shipping, storage, and any ads, subtract it all from your selling price, and what's left is your profit per unit.

A healthy FBA product looks like the example above — but drop that same item's price to $19.99 and the same costs leave just ~$5.50 profit, which is why pricing and product cost matter so much.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting the FBA fulfillment fee is per unit and based on size/weight, not price.
  • Ignoring storage fees, which spike 2–3x in the Oct–Dec peak.
  • Leaving out advertising — most FBA products need PPC to sell.
