How to use this calculator

  1. Enter your numbers in each field above — the calculator updates instantly as you type, so there's nothing to submit.
  2. Use your real figures when you have them, or sensible estimates while you're planning. If a field doesn't apply, leave it at zero.
  3. Compare the results, then change one input at a time to see how each lever (price, cost, fees, volume) moves the outcome.

Formula

POD profit = (Price + Shipping charged − Discount) − Fees − Provider cost − Provider shipping − Ads

Worked example

$24 tee, $10 provider cost, $4.50 provider shipping, ~9.4% fees, $2 ads, $0.30 fixed.

  1. Revenue = $24
  2. Fees = ~$2.26 + $0.30 = $2.56
  3. Costs = 10 + 4.50 + 2 = $16.50
  4. Profit ≈ $4.94

Answer: ~$4.94 profit per order (~20.6% margin)

How it works

POD margins live and die on the print-provider shipping charge. If you don't pass at least part of it to the customer, it eats your margin one order at a time.

How to interpret your results

  • Dollar values are shown per sale, per order, or per item unless a result is explicitly labelled monthly, weekly, or daily.
  • Percentages (margin, ROI, conversion rate) are easier to compare across products and price points than raw dollars — use them when you benchmark.
  • A positive result means you're ahead after the costs and fees you entered. A negative result means the current numbers don't work — change a lever (raise price, cut a cost, lower ad spend) and recalculate.
  • Treat the output as a planning estimate, not a guarantee. Fees, taxes, and conversion rates shift over time — re-run the numbers whenever a key input changes.

Common mistakes

  • Ignoring provider shipping cost because 'shipping is a customer thing'.
  • Setting the retail price to only cover product cost + fees, forgetting ads.
  • Assuming Etsy/Shopify fees are on the price only — they're usually on the full customer total including shipping.

FAQ

Should I charge shipping or offer free shipping?
Roll provider shipping into the retail price if you offer 'free' shipping — otherwise it comes straight from margin.
Is this only for Printify/Printful?
It works for any POD provider — enter the per-order provider cost and shipping your dashboard shows.
