Frequently asked questions

General background on this topic. Informational only — not financial, tax, or legal advice.

What does ROI mean for a Shopify store?
Return on investment compares the money you got back to the money you put in, usually as a percentage. The guide shows the basic formula and what to include.
Is ROI the same as profit margin?
No. Margin is profit as a share of revenue. ROI is profit as a share of what you invested. They can move in different directions.
What counts as an investment for ROI?
Anything you spent to generate the return — inventory, ads, apps, fees, sometimes your own labor. The guide lists common inclusions and exclusions.
Does this guide give financial advice?
No. It explains a calculation. Decisions about whether a return is acceptable depend on your situation and goals.
