Frequently asked questions
General background on this topic. Informational only — not financial, tax, or legal advice.
- What is a break-even point?
- The break-even point is the sales volume at which total revenue equals total costs. Beyond it the store covers more than its costs; below it the store operates at a loss.
- Which costs go into a break-even calculation?
- Fixed costs (Shopify plan, apps, domain) plus variable costs per order (product cost, transaction fees, shipping, packaging). The guide lists common categories.
- Does this replace an accountant?
- No. This is a planning estimate based on the numbers you enter. Tax treatment and reporting requirements vary by country and aren't covered here.
- How often should I redo break-even analysis?
- Whenever fixed costs, pricing, or supplier costs change meaningfully. Many sellers revisit it monthly or each time they launch a new product.
